Treating Acne with Organic Skincare
People who suffer from acne, have particularly sensitive sebaceous glands, which produce sebum (our skin's natural fat). As a result, they are subjected more than others to a naturally occurring hormone in women and men, testosterone.
Testosterone acts as a stimulus in people prone to acne to make the skin produce greater quantities of sebum than others. This results in pores becoming blocked at the base of hair follicles, creating whiteheads and blackheads. For some people, this build up of fat creates the perfect environment for significant growth of Propionibacterium acnes, which are a bacteria normally present on our skin. However, this increased growth leads to red inflamed, and swollen skin called postules, or spots.
We should consider the skin as part of our bodies: There are many other factors to consider when thinking about our skin's health. Alcohol, refined sugar, spicy food, junk food and coffee can all have a detrimental effect on our skin, as can psychological shifts, most notable in puberty. Stress and constipation also have significant negative impacts on the health of our skin.
There is, unforunately, an obvious psychological effect on people with acne on their face, and sometimes people, especially young, need psychological support.
We should also always carefully consider the ingredients of our skincare products: Any of these with aggressive chemical cosmetics can change the hydrolipidic layer of our skin. This in turn will stimulate the production of even more sebum as your body tries to re-establish balance.
There are some important do's and don'ts when it comes to spots: Firstly, don't squeeze them, as they will become even more inflamed, and could possibly create a scar. Do maintain good hygiene: I recommend an organic facial cleanser, which contains anti-inflammatory and anit-bacterial ingredients, such as clove or lavender oil. Subsequently, gently wash your face with a floral face wash (alcohol free). Floral waters are excellent anti-inflammatories and astringents, and also very refreshing. Good examples are roman chamomile, cornflower, and juniper.
I recommend you carry out the above cleansing and toning routine twice a day, or even more if you live in polluted areas.
There are also certain organic skincare products that are created specifically to calm inflamed skin, and protect it from any infection. Propolis, Neem Oil, Boswellia, and lavender are all excellent ingredients to look out for as they are antioxidant, antibacterial, emollient, and anti-inflammatory.
Mind the diet: no junk food or alcohol, plenty instead of fresh organic vegetables rich in beta-carotene (carrot, broccoli, peppers etc.) and antioxidants. I would advise probiotics as well in order to improve the intestinal health.
It goes without saying that you should avoid junk food wherever possible, and ideally cut it out completely. Instead, stick to a diet comprised of organic vegetables, such as carrots, peppers and broccoli, which are rich in beta-carotene and antioxidants. Probiotics are also a good choice as they maintain the functioning of your intestine.
